Report - Youth Committee Meeting
The PLACE4U youth committee held their first open meeting in the Clonmel library on Tuesday 22nd of June at 2pm. The meeting was promoted through the PLACE4U Facebook group with the intention of introducing everybody and providing more information about the Youth Cafe. The meeting was extremely well attended and there was lots of energy, enthusiasm and creative ideas from the group.
The group decided to create a formal structure to keep the committee running smoothly and so, elected officers. Aoife Breen from the Presentation Secondary School was elected Chairperson and Kayleigh Hackett from the Loretto Secondary School was elected secretary. The group agreed that positions in advertising, fundraising and online promotions would be set up in the future and would be filled by the members that show an interest in each area. The group expressed an interest in meeting once every two weeks to keep on top of the project and meeting once a month with the adult members of the committee.
The committee were introduced to the online identity of the project. They saw the current website and social networking strategy. The group had plenty of suggestions as to how the site could be developed to interest more young people. It was agreed that featuring more photographs on the website would attract more traffic. They also agreed that more activity should be generated through the PLACE4U Facebook group. The group was concerned that a lot people did not know the location of the youth cafe. They hoped to change this by taking a series of images directing people to the cafe from the major ‘hang out’ points of the town including: the Cinema, McDonalds, the Main guard and the library. These images would be featured on the website and on the Facebook group.
The group expressed a particular interest in raising more awareness for the youth cafe among the young people in the area. They had excellent ideas for promoting the project. There were suggestions to organise retro games nights, gig nights, fashion shows and graffiti walls for young people in the locality. It was also suggested that a guerrilla marketing strategy be used to create even more awareness. This would include creating special hoodies or t-shirts with the youth cafe’s name and logo that could be used to promote the cafe around the town and could be given as prizes during organised events. The committee felt that posters advertising the Cafe should be put up and leaflets containing information about the cafe could be passed out to generate a buzz for the Cafe.
The details of the next Youth Committee meeting will be posted on the PLACE4U website and will appear on the PLACE4U Facebook and Twitter pages. The committee would like to encourage everybody to connect with PLACE4U via the Facebook group and the Twitter account.
